The Appeal
The fascinating Metropolitan arrived at the confluence of two complementary motoring trends. The first was Americans clamouring for smaller second cars. And secondly, British buyers hoping to cash in on everything that looked American, particularly chrome and fins.
The car was designed in the USA but built in Britain by BMC. 90% of the 95,000 built went stateside, but 9,400 found UK buyers between 1956 and 1961. The Series III Metropolitan from November 1955 tweaked the cosmetics, added a Houndstooth interior and notably the 1,500cc BMC B-Series engine. These later cars are prettier and more usable for modern drivers.
This well-kept Caribbean Blue over Snowberry White Series III was first registered in the UK in August 1957. It is a highly detailed and factory-correct model. Enthusiasts will note that as a post-October 1956 build it is correctly badged only as a ‘Metropolitan.’ The condition is impressive across interior and exterior.
The Metropolitan is one of those fascinating left-field classics that always draws attention at shows. This car’s condition and original detailing add to its appeal.
