The Appeal
When Steve Mcqueen and Bud Ekins needed a bike to perform hair-raising stunts in The Great Escape, they didn’t turn to a period-correct German machine, they insisted upon a Triumph TR6.
Similar to the esteemed Bonneville and favoured by many including McQueen for off-road racing, the TR6 also boasted Triumph’s 650cc engine, with a single Amal carburettor instead of the Bonneville’s two.
Here we have a restored ‘pre-unit’ example that’s been finished to a high standard and reportedly rides very nicely indeed. Few classic bikes are as accomplished as a Triumph and this is a lovely example for the discerning enthusiast.
The History and Paperwork

- We’re informed that it was restored by the previous owner and displayed
- Recommissioned for road use by the vendor

The Condition
- Attractive red and cream paint scheme
- Very few paint blemishes besides the odd small mark
- The fuel tank appears free from dents, as does the oil tank
- The knee grips are slightly perished around the edges, but this is not especially noticeable
- Some wear evident to the steering damper adjustment control, as is to be expected on a bike this old
- The vendor informs us this bike has a Duplex frame
- We couldn’t see any obvious signs of damage or corrosion to the frame or forks
- Smart chromed wheels and the tyres look to be in good order as well
- The remaining chromework is also in really good condition with no pitting we could discern
- The controls and foot pegs remain in very good order
- The instrumentation is clear and legible
