The Appeal
Carlo Abarth saw the potential in Fiat’s 600 city runaround and, between 1956 and 1971, dedicated himself to the task of making it considerably better and faster. The 1000TC of 1965 was the final evolution of that idea, a tiny 85bhp buzzing bee of a track weapon known as ‘the giant killer.’
There are many, many 1000TC replicas, but only a few genuine cars. This is one of them. It was authenticated in 2017 and comes with its original registration documents, which state ‘Abarth 1000.’ In 1997, it received a high-end restoration and has been used primarily as a show car ever since, with very sparing use.
The engine was replaced in the 1970s with an Autobianchi A112 Abarth engine, which is generally acknowledged as a more reliable and durable unit than the original 1000TC motor.
With its purposeful aesthetics and array of lovely period details like the Campagnolo alloys and Abarth dials, this is a truly evocative little racer. A car this entertaining deserves some track day exercise, but it would look equally good parked up in a high end collection. It carries French collector car certification.
