This thoroughly British sporting saloon was way ahead of its time and epitomises style and luxury. 

Having been beautifully crafted from the outset, the Jaguar MKII, is undoubtedly one of the most desirable and sought-after class-acts. 

Sir William Lyons maxim of ‘Grace, Space and Pace’ is certainly embodied in this fine example.

This stunning MKII Jaguar was manufactured on the 10th October 1964, and according to the previous owners research, is number 2520 out of 3084 vehicles manufactured at the Browns Lane Plant, Coventry, in that year.

The first owner purchased BYA 222B from W. Sparrow & Sons, Yeovil, Somerset on the 28th October 1964 and it subsequently spent several years on the Isle of Man before being re-patriated back to the mainland in 1990. It then became one of a fleet of wedding cars from 2006 until 2020. 

We are informed that a mechanical overhaul was carried out in 2016 and the body was restored in 2019 under the ownership of the wedding business. Unfortunately we do not have any further details.   

The original registration number was reinstated in April 2021, and together with all the serial numbers, match the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate that comes with the car. A recent JEC engineers report and Hagerty insurance valuation, both value this particular MKII at £35,000. 

The current owner tells us that over £14,000 has been lavished on this beautiful Jaguar in the last year or so. This is supported by a comprehensive file of parts invoices from jaguar specialists, including S.N.G. Barratt Group, and servicing invoices carried out by Templar Classics, Buckinghamshire and K & N Classic Cars, West Sussex.

The up to date V5 is present along with the current MOT, which expires on the 27th May 2022. There are some older MOT certificates and the exempt tax runs until the 1st June 2022. An original Jaguar service manual and Spare Parts Catalogue are also included.

As you climb aboard you are greeted with the original dealer’s nameplate on the sill, the familiar (and adjustable) Jaguar steering wheel and an abundance of lavish red leather upholstery and lovely burr-walnut wood.

The original reclining front seats, rear seats, door trims, fixtures and fittings are extremely well preserved along with the wool headlining and carpeting. The Smiths instrumentation and switchgear is also in excellent order and, with the exception of the clock, is said to function as it should.

Reassuringly, front and rear inertia seat belts have recently been fitted and a retro-style  radio is also installed and features MP3, BT and Bluetooth connectivity.

Aside from a few scrapes to the paintwork, the boot space is clean and tidy and contains the spare wheel and a mallet, but no tool kit.

Having been resprayed in 2019, the sleek dark blue paintwork is described as immaculate. 

The body looks very straight and ding-free and the panel gaps appear even. Although barely noticeable, there are a couple of small areas of bubbling on the top of the nearside wing and to the bottom of the drivers door (see photos). 

Without exception, the extensive brightwork, glass, mirrors and rubber trim is all very presentable, and upon first inspection, the sills, boot floor and chassis look well painted, undersealed and structurally sound. Slim plastic Coombes style spats are in-situ and look the part. The originals will come with the car too.   

The optional chrome wire wheels are in excellent condition and set this car of a treat. Radar Dimax Classic 185/15 tyres sit up front with Vredestein Sprint Classic’s at the rear. Plenty of tread remains.

The heart of this Jaguar is the tractable and reliable 3,442cc straight-six engine. 

It resides in a clean and well maintained engine bay, and having had a major overhaul in 2016, should be reliable. The oil pressure appears to be a healthy 40-45psi when warm.

A long list of recently installed mechanical parts include:

 • Electronic ignition

 • Zeus callipers, discs, master cylinder and copper pipes

 • New steering box, column bushes, ball joints, and track rods

 • Radiator rebuilt and re-cored

 • New coil

 • New rear springs in 2016

 • Quartz halogen headlamps

During the photoshoot we were taken for a short drive to experience the delights of this refined classic. The comfortable and indeed quiet cabin is a very pleasant place to be.

The owner highlights how it “performs strongly whilst being very original”. Acceleration is smooth and the car feels composed on the road. The 4-speed manual gearbox seemed precise, the overdrive engaged without hesitation, the differential is quiet and the disc brakes pulled up effortlessly. 

It is clear to see that this Jaguar has been lovingly cared for and has wanted for nothing. 

Aside from the wonderful body and interior, recent expenditure should offer a reliable and fantastic driving experience for years to come.
