The Appeal

Volvo is still known for safety, but back in the 1960s, it was also known for mechanical simplicity - a quality that made its cars some of the most rugged and dependable money could buy. The Amazon was a brilliant saloon and also excelled in rallies, winning numerous long-distance events in period.

The four-door variant offered practical family motoring with a sense of solidity and refinement that set it apart from much of the competition. This 1964 example is the dependably 121, reported to be a largely original UK car that spent its early life in Southampton before being dry stored for approximately 20 years.

Purchased by the current owner in 2023, it was sent to Millars Garage, where extensive mechanical work was carried out at high cost. The vendor states the seats and door cards are believed to be original and in very good condition, while the car retains its rare radiator roller blind: a charming period feature operated by a chain pull from inside the cockpit.

Despite being MOT-exempt, it has been tested annually and holds a current (advisory-free) certificate valid until December 2026. The vendor is reluctantly selling due to a recent health diagnosis, having originally intended the Amazon as a daily retirement driver.
