A head turning custom sandrail buggy based on reliable VW Beetle underpinnings
Road legal and registered with Historic Vehicle MOT and VED exempt status
Professionally configured to provide true off and on road potential
The Appeal
Bruce Meyers is often credited as the father of the Beach Buggy, or as Americans prefer, Dune Buggy concept. His 1964 Meyers Manx was a fibreglass bodied creation using a Volkswagen Beetle chassis and underpinnings. There was method in this apparent madness. The rear engine, rear wheel drive Beetle maximised traction and the air-cooled engine made the customiser’s life simpler due to lack of complex cooling systems.
A sandrail is an evolution of the Beach Buggy ethos but comprising of a welded space frame body which, essentially, incorporated a rigid roll over cage for additional safety.
This example is a pristine example of a sandrail built by buggy specialists, Dreamshack. As is usual it is based on Volkswagen Beetle underpinnings which are either reconditioned or replaced as required. The key attribute of this example is the fact that it is road registered, MOT and VED exempt and ready to use and enjoy immediately. IMG_4394.jpeg3.85 MB
The History and Paperwork
The basis of this sandrail was a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle 1300
At some point in the recent past the Beetle was used as the basis for this conversion
The sandrail was built by specialist Dreamshack
The buggy has been dry stored for several years
During that time, it has been maintained and serviced as required
Due to the specialist type of vehicle, paperwork included is minimal
We understand a V5 registration document is present
This classifies the sandrail as a Historic Vehicle based on the Beetle’s age
As such the buggy is MOT and VED exempt and ready to use
The sandrail has been previously MOT’d with two tests listed in the Government portal
The last one expired in August 2020 and was advisory free
The enduring appeal of this type of laser focused recreation vehicle is clear for all to see. They provide more than just wind in the hair enjoyment but rather a gripping and unique sensory experience. Where the vehicles are based on classic Beetle underpinnings, they also offer a really cost effective and reliable way to enjoy some unique classic car fun, too.
This example looks amazing in its bright green livery and sitting on those appropriately staggered chunky, off-road tyres and bright chrome wheels. Even the VW boxer engine looks like a modern art installation with its chrome and gloss black powder coating. The new owner will have the choice of further developing the sandrail with fitted luggage, frame padding and the like or to just use and enjoy it as it is. The major benefit of this example is the ability to legally drive it to your off-road location of choice before letting it do what it’s designed for. In either case you will sure to be wearing a huge grin on your face as soon as that air-cooled motor rasps into life.
