The Appeal

Rover’s P5 was an enormously important model for the brand, elevating it from the post-war era into a thrusting new age of innovation and technological advancement. When the box-fresh P5 launched in 1958, it was a thoroughly modern offering featuring unitary construction and a luxuriously appointed interior, and the model went on to evolve across four distinct generations – the more powerful Mk2 of 1962, the further refined Mk3 of 1965, and finally the P5B of 1967. The ‘B’ stood for ‘Buick’, that being the source of Rover’s popular 3.5-litre V8 engine which was now offered on the P5 platform. As well as a four-door saloon, the P5B was also offered as a four-door coupé (a variant introduced with the Mk2), with a lowered roofline and rakishly reshaped pillars, and it’s a P5B Coupé that we’re looking at here.

This example has evidently received a great deal of loving care over the years, as we can see from the history file that a great many parts have been renewed – bushes, brake pipes, trim pieces, the car is complete in terms of spec and it’s a lovely thing to drive too. The current owner purchased it last year with the intention of putting it on the fleet of a wedding car business, although a change in circumstances has now necessitated the sale. The interior is a glorious place to be, sumptuously trimmed and fabulously appointed; the exterior has suffered a questionable paint job at some point in its past, but the body itself appears sound so this car could well be just a repaint away from glory. It’s certainly an impressive machine to behold regardless of the cosmetic blemishes, and it drives beautifully.

The Interior

If you’ve never set foot inside the cabin of a P5B before, you may need to reframe your expectations: this thing is properly luxurious. Generously stuffed seats swathed in tasteful soft leather, it’s a cabin that cossets and relaxes to an impressive degree. The airy glasshouse and broad dash create a sense of openness that’s missing from modern cars, and there’s just the right amount of wood trim to complement the hide.

Aside from the addition of a modern CD head unit, it’s all original spec in here. The headlining is complete, the carpets are good, the veneer is un-crazed and the dash-top free from cracks. Passengers are well catered for – there’s a separate heater control in the rear, while the front passenger gets a clock mounted on the far left. The doorcards are complete, the windows wind up and down freely, and the pull-out front table is present. It’s all dry and tidy inside the boot too.

The Exterior

Naturally your eye will be drawn to the imperfections in the paint, but if you take a moment to look past that you’ll find so much to love here. The P5B Coupé profile is achingly pretty, a true design classic, and all of the correct trim, badging and brightwork is present – including the all-important and model-specific ‘3.5 Litre’ badging, auxiliary fog lights and chrome Rostyle wheels.

The wheels are all in tidy condition, and wear whitewall tyres with plenty of tread. Panel fit is good throughout, with perhaps just a minor adjustment necessary to finesse the bootlid fitment. The rear bumper has had a little ding and would benefit from re-chroming to eradicate its smattering of surface corrosion, but on the whole the chrome trim is good – and, crucially, it’s all here. The light lenses and window glass are all good. It really does appear to be a reassuringly solid and complete example.

The Mechanicals

  • 3.5-litre V8

Rover’s 3.5-litre V8 is a notoriously robust thing; indeed, it’s something of an icon. And this one seems to be in very fine fettle – the owner has recently had it compression-tested and fully serviced by an engineer who originally apprenticed at Rover back in the 1960s (and who could know more about these cars?), and it’s running wonderfully. It fires happily on the first turn of the key, idles smoothly and evenly, and pulls keenly through the revs.

The P5B benefitted from standard-fit Borg Warner Type 35 automatic transmission and ‘hydrosteer’ variable-rate power steering, both of which are reportedly trouble-free, and there are no issues reported with the brakes or suspension either. Looking under the car, we can see that it’s received new copper brake pipes, various new bushes, and has generally been paid a decent amount of loving attention. The result is a willing and dependable Rover that’s a pleasure to drive.

Summary

The P5B Coupé really was the king of suburbia in its day. You can imagine doctors, lawyers and captains of industry returning to their suburban homes in superlative wafting comfort after a hard day’s work, into a scene exactly as you see depicted in these photos here. And it’s every bit as impressive a machine today, its myriad charms taking on a timeless quality.

Now, there are two ways to view this car: firstly, it could be something that you treat to a quality new paint job and turn into a proper show-stopper. Or secondly, you could just not worry about the aesthetics and enjoy it for what it is – a beautifully appointed luxury classic that’s a genuine pleasure to cruise around in. Either way, this joyful example is going to make a great buy for somebody.
