1970 Volkswagen Beetle 1303S

***Vendor supplied images***

  • Range-topping ‘S’ variant with 1.6-litre ‘Twin-Port’ engine
  • A highly original example
  • Reportedly running and driving well, ready to enjoy

The Appeal

By the start of the 1970s, the Beetle was beginning to look rather old-fashioned. Therefore, Volkswagen launched the radically revised ‘Super Beetle’ in 1970, starting with the 1302, and later introducing the even more advanced 1303. Both had longer wheelbases, replacing front torsion bar suspension with independent MacPherson Strut coil springs. The 1303 also featured the Beetle’s first curved windscreen, making room for a padded vinyl dashboard. This was the most “modern” Beetle to date, and the ultimate version was the 1303S with Volkswagen’s ‘Twin-Port’ 1.6-litre engine.
Here we have a very original and highly presentable 1303S, resplendent in a period-correct green. As the photographs show, this car is in great shape for its age, and while there’s scope for a few small improvements, we’re assured that t is running well and ready to enjoy.
