The Appeal
Emissions legislation and the growing development of the American road network prompted Mercedes to install a 4.5L version of its M117 V8 under the spacious bonnet of its popular R107. The new car arrived in 1972, initially badged 350SL 4.5 and developing nearly 200bhp for North American buyers.
This very fine metallic beige 450SL comes from the model's launch year and is a particularly well-maintained example. It retains its factory colour combination, including the two-tone "Bamboo" MB Tex interior and dark brown roof, with the useful later addition of rear seats. The car remained in California's warm and cosy climate until 2022, when it arrived in Europe. The mileage may seem high for a classic, but it's barely run in for this legendarily robust car.
The seller reports an extensive service history from March 2026 covering brakes and suspension as well as a full overhaul. It also has a useful independent valuation from February 2026 and a recent engine compression test. The car is registered in France with a Carte Grise and a current MOT valid until March 2031.
