The Appeal
In 1973 you could have bought a CB750 for half the price of this R90S, but whether you’d really want to is another matter. Because, secretly, despite how good the Honda was, you’d have always known the BMW was miles better. There’s a strong case to argue that the R90S is the best BMW bike ever made.
This smooth, powerful and comfortable superbike is the consummate all-rounder. Those qualities make a good one perfect for long and short rides, all secure in the knowledge of its bulletproof reliability.
This 1974 R90S was restored in 2001 at a cost equivalent to nearly €20,000 today. The work was extensive and paid close attention to the bike’s factory specification, including the lovely silver grey metallic paintwork. Sparing use since means it remains in very good order.
The vendor tells us that the bike has had just five keepers in its 51 years. A BMW authentication certificate confirms the specification. We are told that it was factory supplied with a long list of features including Silent Hektik electronic ignition, SU twin-disc front brake system and Wilbers shock absorbers.
In September 2024 it received a full service. Additional work included new tyres, brake overhaul and replacement brake fluid.
The vendor says:
“A beautifully maintained and tastefully upgraded BMW R 90 S, combining timeless design with authentic 1970s performance. A rare opportunity to acquire a superb example of one of BMW’s most celebrated classic motorcycles. What I love most about it is the way it rides: the smooth yet powerful 898cc boxer twin, the effortless torque, and the unmistakable sound that only an air-cooled BMW can make. It’s comfortable enough for long journeys but thrilling every time you open the throttle. Every ride feels like stepping back into a golden era of motorcycling.
“Whether you’re a collector, a rider, or simply someone who appreciates timeless craftsmanship, this R90S will never fail to make you smile. Fully documented ownership. Only five owners since new. High-quality, full restoration in 2001. Mechanically perfect, visually excellent. Always dry stored and carefully maintained. Historic (H) registration. Ready to ride and enjoy immediately.”
