1978 MGB GT

Highlights

  • Fully restored example
  • Excellent condition both inside and out
  • Requires nothing to be enjoyed
  • Extensive paperwork and service history
  • Truly cared for and maintained

The Background

First introduced in 1965, the MGB GT is one of those cars that truly stands out in classic car history. With its pioneering greenhouse roof design and classy body lines, the GT model was a bold and revolutionary entry into the sporty-hatchback market.

Due to the success and accessibility of MG vehicles at the time, the MGB GT ensured that drivers were able to experience beautiful Jaguar-esque styling and a taste of good old British performance, for a mere fraction of the price.
Although few features differ from the roadster version of the MGB, the GT model not only boasts a larger, more comfortable seating arrangement but also offers far more luggage space and a more refined ride.

Powered by British Motoring Company’s iconic inline 4 B-series engine, the car proudly stands just above the roadster version, with a top speed of 105 miles per hour.

Combine the torquey engine with a smooth gearbox, simply gorgeous body lines, classy interior comforts and you’ve got yourself a thoroughly enjoyable driving experience.

The History

As confirmed by the heritage certificate included with the car’s paperwork, this gorgeous MGB GT started life in January 1978 as a UK rubber bumper model in Carmine Red, equipped with overdrive and a cloth interior.
Supplied by Kennings of Chesterfield, the first owner took delivery of the car in March of that year, and the car would see the UK roads properly for the first time. Over the years, this MG has passed through a number of caring owners, accumulating service history and paperwork along the way.
Between 2008 and 2019, the previous owner of the vehicle treated the car to a professional restoration, which is extensively logged within the car’s vast collection of paperwork.

The owner at the time invested considerable amounts to ensure the car received every single item and piece of work that it needed, to achieve the result we see today.
With a great deal of information to mention in this listing alone, key parts of the rebuild include an interior overhaul, refurbished engine, refreshed drivetrain and suspension components, and perhaps more noticeably, a full respray in Tartan red.
Since being refurbished to the highest of standards, this MG has covered very few miles, venturing out on dry days, and has been truly treasured by its current keeper.

With another car in mind, the current owner has now decided that this stunning MGB GT is ready for its next adventure, with yet another caring owner.

The Paperwork

This classy MG comes with a huge array of paperwork, photographs, and books for the new owner to enjoy. The collection of paperwork includes the following:
 • V5C document
 • Over 20 previous MOT Certificates
 • Invoices for OEM parts ordered
 • Invoices for previous restoration labour carried out
 • Service history and relevant receipts.
 • The original Supercover warranty
As mentioned earlier, this lovely MG has undergone quite an extensive rebuild and will come with plenty of paperwork detailing the work carried out. The car was treated to an assortment of new panels, a chrome bumper conversion, new suspension to suit, rebuilt drivetrain (including a refurbished engine), brakes, a Webasto sunroof, stylish wheels, interior overhaul, a full respray and plenty more.

The full extent of the rebuild is far too extensive to gloss over in this listing alone, but buyers will be pleased to know that the paperwork includes a huge collection of photos taken during the rebuild process, as well as detailed invoices for everything.

With the majority of the work being carried out by MRS Classics of Tamworth and having been maintained by specialists over the years, this car is now in perfect mechanical condition and needs nothing to be enjoyed for years to come.
As an added bonus, the car also comes with an assortment of books, including the Haynes Manual should you fancy a spot of tinkering here and there.

The Interior

Inside the cabin is a truly comfortable & pleasant space to be, and following an interior overhaul in 2008-2010, looks absolutely brilliant. As part of its rebuild, the GT was graced with a retrimmed interior, including new seat covers and foam.

The interior was also fitted with a sleek walnut dash, the iconic MotoLita steering wheel, a new headliner, sun visors, and a few more detailed goodies, all outlined in the car’s paperwork.
Upon sitting in the car, the first thing you will notice is just how comfortable the seats are, although you may feel slightly guilty for sitting in them at first as they appear brand new and are in superb condition.

The rear seats of course have rarely or perhaps never been sat in since the car’s rebuild, and look excellent in their black leather finish with classy red piping.
You’ll then likely realise why the GT stands out from the roadster variant, as the interior is a genuinely enjoyable place to be. Comfortable and spacious enough even for long drives, the interior is made complete with the addition of its Webasto roof, which folds back without fault, letting sunlight and fresh air into the cabin.
All dials, both door cards, steering wheel and controls are in brilliant condition, with just minor signs of use. You certainly wouldn’t expect a 40-year-old car’s interior to be just as clean, tidy, and well cared for as this example.

The Exterior

The exterior of this car looks absolutely spectacular and is without a doubt one of the most tasteful and well-presented examples available today. Having been treated to new panels and given a full respray in Tartan Red, this MG stands out from the crowd and looks at home in the sunshine.
The car was also converted to the more desirable chrome bumpers, as opposed to the original rubber bumpers, which are often considered unsightly by enthusiasts. In order to achieve the factory chrome bumper fitment, the car was also lowered on different springs to suit the conversion.

The combination of the lower stance and Minilite-style alloys pairs beautifully with the vibrant paintwork to give this MGB an award-winning aesthetic.
As part of its extensive rebuild, the vehicle was also given a Webasto sunroof, which adds a new layer of detail to this already stylish vehicle, and provides passengers with a fantastic experience on sunny days.
As you would expect, all exterior chrome, glass, details, and trim pieces are in excellent condition and look brilliant against the red bodywork. The near-perfect exterior condition continues to the wheels, which not only suit the car perfectly but could easily pass as brand new.

All 4 wheels are wrapped in a combination of Nexen & Falken tyres, with enough tread for the new owner to enjoy on the road.

The Mechanics

With an incredibly impressive rebuild between 2008 and 2010, this section of the car’s description could easily fill a number of pages in itself. The summarised information is this: the car has been fitted with an assortment of goodies, starts up well, and drives like a dream.

Fitted with overdrive, a refreshed drivetrain, suspension, and brakes, the car handles modern roads with ease and seems at home wherever you take it.
With a truly impressive amount of paperwork & high-quality workmanship to serve as validation, the car benefits from the addition of the following key items to name a few:
 • Power steering, fitted in 2018 and supplied by the MGOC
 • Rebuilt engine from Tamworth Engines, complete with an unleaded cylinder head
 • Refreshed brakes, suspension and gearbox
 • Water pump
 • New Battery
 • Exterior rebuild with new panels and professional repairs
Since being rebuilt, the car has only ventured out on dry days covering a mere 16,000 miles. As expected, the car remains in perfect working order and is guaranteed to please any driver and passenger alike.

The Appeal

Perhaps one of the most iconic British cars of all time, the MGB GT is a car that should be on any collector or enthusiast's list. It’s a vehicle that made waves with its design and style choices and came at a time when the MGB was quickly rising in popularity in both Europe and the United States.

As a bridge between a sporty roadster and a practical hatch, it’s easy to see why the GT model was a hit with consumers and continues to top the list of iconic classics.
This particular example is without a doubt one of the cleanest examples on the market, has been professionally rebuilt, needs nothing to be enjoyed, and is guaranteed to fill the new owner with pride.
