The second-generation Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is probably one of the most recognisable American cars from the 1970s purely down its TV appearances in the popular film series Smokey and the Bandit. The car used was a second generation car much like this one and they went on to produce a 3rd and 4th generation.IMG_20211021_173058_939~2.jpg2.59 MB
The History
This Pontiac was being restored by a previous owner and he ran out of steam due to his age. The current owner (a Pontiac enthusiast) took it on and has now decided he too doesn’t have the means at the moment to finish it with his other builds. The car has had a comprehensive respray externally, the engine has been reworked and now it all needs putting back together and finishing.
This is listed as an unfinished project, being a popular model there are still parts available for the Trans Am should you need them.IMG_20211028_161452.jpg5.47 MB
The Paperwork
The car is currently located in The Netherlands so will come with the necessary Dutch paperwork. The seller has advised however, worldwide shipping can be arranged should the new owner need it.IMG_20211028_163330.jpg6.42 MB
The Interior
The interior is semi fitted, there is a new headliner and an “as good as new” carpet. The door cards are present but will need work/replacement. The seats however are in fantastic condition. The car has had sound deadening fitted and there will inevitably be some small upholstery parts that will need sourcing to finish the interior.IMG_20211021_171733_469.jpg3.16 MB
The Exterior
The exterior of the car has seen fresh paint in a really deep black and looks well. It also received new door handles and refurbished Trans Am SE wheels with new tyres. It is also the T-Top model with removable roof panels. The car's original build sheet is present and it has been restored to its original spec of black on black. The doors, although not yet fitted, are in great condition and of course freshly painted. IMG_20211028_161508.jpg5.58 MB
The Mechanics
The Pontiac 400 6.6 litre engine has had comprehensive work and is sat in the shell but not connected yet. The 350 gearbox is behind the engine. Everything on the subframe has been replaced and is brand new, including the control arms. It is thought to be a matching numbers car. For completion the car will need a fuel tank and brake and fuel lines. IMG_20211028_161647.jpg5.91 MB
The Appeal
Unfinished project cars can seem a little daunting, however they can also represent somewhat of a gem to many an oily handed enthusiast.
This Trans Am could well be that gem. When restoring cars most of us know that the time consuming and usually most expensive parts of the build are the engine and the bodywork.
This project has had money, time and effort lavished on all three of those departments and now someone needs to see it across the finish line and then enjoy it for the classic Americana it is. Put it back together, add the smokey and the bandit decals and a CB radio and you’ll be living the dream before you know it!
