The Appeal
Alfa Romeo’s history has often been volatile, yet that heraldic circular badge has been proudly sported by some of the finest cars ever created. The Alfasud Sprint embodies this complex heritage – launched at a difficult moment in the company’s history, but taking the glorious handling and boxer engine of the standard ‘sud and draping it in a purposefully angular bodyshell. The result is one of the most evocative cars of the 1970s – a practical and affordable classic blessed with rare charisma and driver appeal.
This particular car is believed to be the only 1979 1.5 Sprint still taxed and on the roads in the UK. Its recently rustproofed red exterior blends original and lovingly restored paintwork, with an aftermarket rear spoiler and sunroof the only additions to that timeless Giugiaro design. The alloy wheels are immaculate, the original beige interior and carpets are in superb condition, and the textured dash still sports a lowercase ‘sprint’ logo beside original dials and switchgear.
There is minimal wear across the interior, as befits a car with an authenticated mileage of less than 40,000. The supplying dealership sticker is original, as are the code number stamps and recommended oil stickers under the bonnet, where the boxer engine looks to be in good condition. The current owner describes the car as running well, though it’s only ever lightly driven in good weather before being returned to a heated garage.
The Sprint will be sold with a wealth of paperwork in a lever arch file, dating back to its sale and encompassing a full service history and the original ‘guaranty certificate’. There are photographs of bodywork repairs, and details of the eight-year period when it was on SORN from 2004 onwards. Although there is another 1979 1.5 Sprint currently on SORN, this is believed to be the only taxed version of this iconic Alfa in the UK. Not only is it an immaculately presented time capsule, it’s also the last of its kind.
