The Appeal
The Volante version of Aston Martin’s fastback V8 GT arrived in late 1978 and was based on the improved ‘Oscar India’ Series 4 car. Each one took four months to build, leading to an eye-watering price equivalent to £200,000 today. That explains why just 656 of these ‘Series 1’ Volantes were built.
This car was first registered in August 1979 and has covered less than 68,000 miles since. Beautifully finished in Tourmaline Blue over Magnolia leather with Off White roof, the condition today is a testament to that sparing use and the ministrations of its handful of keepers.
The vendor tells us that the history file dates back to 1979. He acquired the car in 2020 and has since spent £18,000 on scheduled and preventative maintenance and improvements using well-regarded specialists. In 2019, prior to purchase £7,000 was invested in servicing and other work, bringing the total over six years to £25,000.
It is a mark of the vendor’s approach that to ready the car for sale, he dispatched it to a well-regarded specialist for a check over and service. The resulting work, in July 2025, totals over £1,800 and included a full service and carburettor tune-up. The car also carries a voluntary MOT valid to July 2026 with no advisories. That adds a further level of reassurance for buyers.
The V8 Volante is a thoroughly British, hand-built GT with few obvious rivals. This gorgeous car is one of the nicest and best-kept we’ve seen in a long while.
The vendor says:
“This car is so much fun to drive, I will miss driving this car forever.”

Before the V8, Aston Martins tended to underplay their potency. With its big bonnet bulge, be-spoilered Kamm Tail, and, on this car, capacious Vantage spoiler, there is no mistaking what this Series 1 Volante is capable of. It is a car that carries considerable presence.
To its general Series 4 aesthetics this car adds a beautiful Tourmaline Blue metallic paint scheme, Off White roof and Magnolia leather interior. All are factory correct and all are in very good order. We recommend close scrutiny of the photos - we struggled to find any defects worth of particular note across the interior and exterior.
Aside from a discreet high-end DAB/Bluetooth stereo, this car is factory standard. It is a really fantastic example of these early Volantes.

The simply named V8 heralded the arrival of Tadek Marek’s venerated 5.3L hand-built engine. To handle the power the cars needed Chrysler’s robust Torqueflite auto box.
The Series 4 returned the reliable Weber carburettor set up of the first cars. In this car they have received a recent check over and tune up by a noted marque specialist immediately prior to sale.
The vendor tells us that the car is matching numbers and a quick perusal of the useful BMIHT certificate verifies this. Highlights of the history file are shown in the photos, indicating £25,000 of work on the car since 2019. The details are provided in the photos. The vendor tells us that the history file dates back continuously to 1979, when the car was first registered.
It is always encouraging when a vendor sends a car to market after having it checked over and fully serviced. That work was completed in July 2025. That it also carries a voluntary MOT is a further sign of the vendor’s confidence in the car. That runs to July 2026 with no advisories.
