The Appeal
Enthusiasts have been arguing the point for decades, and likely will continue to, but for our money, if you want a classic Porsche to use and enjoy, the early 80s SC 3L is peak air-cooled 911. Equipped with the stronger all-aluminium flat six from the 930, plus the 915 gearbox, these cars add a touch of luxury to make every journey more comfortable, but without losing the analogue simplicity of the earlier cars.
This 1980 SC is a proper find. It has covered just 97,000 miles from new, which is supported by the extensive history file, and presents at a high level thanks to a 2016 restoration. That included a full bare-metal repaint in the car’s factory-correct black, a cabin retrim in original Sand Beige and a full rebuild of that 3L motor. It has been little used since and carries Lithuanian technical certification to October 2030.
The car spent its life in California with the same keeper from 1984 to 2015 when it arrived in Lithuania. The current keeper acquired it in 2016. The history file is genuinely impressive and is said to include extensive work by well-regarded Santa Ana Porsche racers and repairers Andial. The car comes to market with fresh service, including oil and filters.
The vendor says:
“The 911SC is often called one of the best driver’s classic 911s because it hits a rare sweet spot where purity, durability, and feedback all meet. First, the engine. The 3.0-litre air-cooled flat-six is legendary for its strength and linear power delivery. It doesn’t overwhelm you with electronics or turbo boost—it rewards precision. You work for the speed, and that’s exactly what makes it satisfying. Second, the balance.
“By 1980, Porsche had largely tamed the early 911’s wild rear-engine handling without killing its character. The SC communicates constantly through the steering wheel and seat, giving you confidence while still demanding respect. It teaches you to drive properly. Third, the steering feel. Unassisted, light, and alive, the SC’s steering is something modern cars simply can’t replicate. Every camber change, every grip limit is felt—not filtered. Fourth, mechanical honesty. No driver aids, no screens, no modes. Just clutch, gearbox, throttle, and brakes working in harmony.
“The 915 gearbox may require intent, but when driven correctly, it feels mechanical and rewarding, not numb. Finally, usability and reliability. Unlike earlier fragile classics, the 911SC was over-engineered. You can drive it hard, drive it often, and trust it — on mountain roads, long tours, or fast backroads. The 1980 911SC isn’t about lap times or numbers. It’s about connection. And that’s why it’s one of the best driver’s cars Porsche ever made. And they are getting more and more scarce.”
