The Appeal
Nobody expected a small Swedish maker of safe saloons to turn the motoring world on its head, but that’s exactly what happened. The 99 was the first mass-produced turbocharged car, paving the way for this technology to hit the mainstream.
Most 99 Turbos were 3dr ‘Combi’ models, so this 1980 2dr ‘notchback’ is a genuine rarity. Just 200 are believed to have been brought to the UK in black, and this car is one of a handful of survivors. The 2dr had a stronger body and is noted for its better handling.
This car is sold as a project, but we are told it is complete and, according to the vendor, also solid. The interior retains the lovely red velour that helped make the 99 Turbo so distinctive, and it looks complete and well preserved. The car retains an array of tempting Saab details like the original leather wheel, Bosch driving lights and Inka alloys. It shows just 115,832 miles from new.
Historically significant and extremely rare, this 99 Turbo deserves a new lease of life. For the right buyer, it will be a fascinating project.
