The Appeal

The Mercedes Gazelle was one of the most popular neo-classic kit cars of the 1970s and 1980s, designed to evoke the dramatic pre-war styling of the legendary 1929 Mercedes-Benz SSK roadster. With its sweeping wings, exposed headlights, external spare wheel and upright radiator grille, the Gazelle captures the spirit of one of the most celebrated sports cars ever produced, and does so with the practicality and accessibility of a fiberglass-bodied kit car.

What sets this 1986 example apart from the vast majority of Gazelle replicas is its engine. Where most were built using modest four-cylinder units sourced from Volkswagen or Ford donor vehicles, this car is fitted with a Ford small-block V8 displacing 4.7 litres. The vendor states that this type of engine commonly produces approximately 250bhp. In a car with a lightweight fiberglass body, Gazelles typically weigh between 900 and 1,000kg, resulting in a striking power-to-weight ratio and a driving experience far removed from that of a typical Gazelle. The unmistakable sound of a classic American V8 only adds to the theatre.

V8-powered Gazelles are genuinely uncommon, and this example represents an opportunity to acquire one of the more characterful and entertaining iterations of a well-loved neo-classic design.
