The Appeal
The first-generation Toyota MR2 was a landmark car - the first mid-engined production vehicle from a Japanese manufacturer, offering a driving experience that punched well above its modest price point. Thanks to its sharp, wedge-shaped styling and rev-happy 1.6-litre twin-cam engine, these handsome sports cars remain one of the most engaging of the 1980s.
This 1986 example, finished in its original red with a black-and-red interior and a factory sunroof, has covered just 23,406 miles from new. Delivered through Toyota Sidcup in August 1986, it was maintained through Toyota main dealers regardless of mileage until approximately 2006, and comes with a history file stretching back to purchase. Having been with the vendor since May 2011, the car has spent some time SORN, with regular maintenance whilst in dry storage.
In late 2023, it underwent a thorough underside restoration by Deeside-based marque specialist MR2-Ben, encompassing removal of all underseal, welding, resealing, a suspension rebuild with coilovers, new brake pads, discs, and calliper kits, plus a cambelt and water pump replacement.
