The Land Rover 90 was introduced by in 1984 as a refinement of their classic Land Rover model. With a much improved cabin and better engines, it offered the same rugged reliability and all-round ability as the original, but was even more practical and capable.

The change to the ‘Defender’ name came along in 1990, with more cabin, drivetrain and engine refinements and improvements. In fact, it was so successful that it remained in production almost unchanged until 2016, and is still a sought-after vehicle today.

First registered in October 1994, this Defender 90 has been used as a light commercial vehicle for most of its life. The current owner acquired it in 2021 and undertook a comprehensive and sympathetic restoration and recommissioning.

While some work was carried out on the engine and drivetrain to recommission and service it, overall the majority of the work required was to restore the car’s bodywork. As the current owner runs a fabrication and welding business, they undertook all of this work themselves and finished it to a very high standard.

The car has now been given a fresh MOT and is ready for its new owner to enjoy.

Outside of the essentials (current V5, MOT certificate), not much in the way of paperwork comes with the vehicle. There are a couple of receipts in the car’s file for bodywork items, and it comes with two sets of keys.

The cabin has been left in original condition as much as possible, with the dash, door cards and switchgear all in good condition and working well. Some of the trim around the driver’s seat base and the transmission gaiters would benefit from being renewed, but are perfectly serviceable. Included are a set of official Land Rover rubber floor mats, and underneath the cabin floor and footwells (common areas of concern) are in excellent condition having been restored by the current owner.

Other than a rip on the base of the passenger seat, the 3 seats in the cabin are in good condition overall. Trimmed in an attractive grey “hound’s tooth” fabric, with a good shampoo they should have years more life left in them. A more modern JVC radio/CD stereo has also been installed.

The rear compartment is in good condition, with some wear and tear, but nothing that should be of concern to anyone. It’s in basic trim at the moment, perfect for a working or commercial vehicle. But should you wish to carry rear passengers, it would be a relatively simple job to install standard rear Defender bench seats. Overall it’s very good for the age of the vehicle, and there is also a full-size spare wheel present.

We’re very much of the opinion that Marine Blue with a contrast white roof is the best colour scheme for a Defender, and this car does nothing to dissuade us from that opinion. It looks fantastic. The owner has done a great job of comprehensively repairing any exterior damage or age-related wear. The sheet meta is all on superb condition, and the paint is very good. There are a couple of minor dents on the driver’s door, but they are very small.

All of the exterior plastics and trim are likewise is fine condition, as are the lights, protective bonnet trims and bumpers. At the rear is a heavy-duty tow-hitch, so you can make the most of the Defender’s 3.5t towing capacity. The original 5-spoke 16” alloy wheels are all in good condition for their age, with some light wear and tear evident. They are shod in Runway Enduro All Terrain tyres, which look to be in great condition with lots of life left in them.

Underneath, the owner has clearly undertaken a significant amount of work to restore the car. The chassis, floor, axles and suspension components all look to be in very good condition. Everything is very solid, with no major wear or damage evident. The owner has also applied Wax Oyl to the underside, to protect the restored bodywork from the elements.

Mechanically, the car is in unrestored but very good, original condition. The owner has serviced the vehicle as required and undertaken any needed maintenance. The engine starts and runs smoothly, and the transmission shifts in the traditionally firm way that all Defender gearboxes do. We are assured by the owner that the vehicle rides and runs very well, and we certainly heard no evidence of unwanted noises from the gearbox, suspension or brakes. Everything appeared to be in very good order.

The engine is the 300TDI unit, the pick of the bunch from the powertrains available at the time. With the turbocharged 2.5 litre diesel offering smoother, quieter operation than the less powerful 200TDI, it puts out a healthy 111bhp and 264Nm, making it a highly capable and versatile unit. They’re legendarily long-lived when cared for, so it should be good for many more years of service.

The fact that the car has a fresh MOT (until February 2023) should give any potential buyer real confidence in the quality of the vehicle.

When you talk about icons of motoring, the Land Rover Defender comes very high on the list. Can you think of a more iconic vehicle? One that would be as instantly recognisable to people from all corners of the globe? We can’t. It’s a cliché that the first car many people in the world ever saw was a Defender, but it’s also probably true. 

For more than six decades, if you wanted a “go-anywhere” adventure vehicle, a reliable daily workhorse, a hugely-capable towing vehicle or an all-round countryside family wagon, there really was only one choice. Reliable, iconic and almost limitlessly capable, it’s no wonder they’re still highly sought-after.

This is a fine example too. We adore the Marine Blue colour scheme with contrast roof, it suits the car perfectly. And having had the bodywork and underside professionally restored, it’s in great condition for a 27 year old vehicle. We reckon it would make a brilliant workhorse for many years to come. Alternatively, as this is a very original vehicle, it would make a tremendous base for a complete restoration. With the bodywork and underside already taken care of, and the drivetrain in fine condition, with a light touch on the interior you’d have an absolute cracker of a Defender.
