Introduced in 1986 and kept in production for a decade, the W124 is regarded by many as the last true Mercedes-Benz saloon, built to a tradition of being massively over-engineered. In 1994, the model was given a subtle facelift along with a new engine range, and it’s these clear indicator cars that have the more modern and more efficient engines, albeit with the same inherent reliability as their predecessors.
The E220 was – in many ways – the pick of the range. The 2,199cc four was a new engine, developed for the flagship W202 C-Class models and the upcoming W210 E-Class, with greater efficiency and performance than the older 200 models. This car is one of the first E220s.
It’s a remarkable car. Unlike many W124s, which by definition live a hard life, it was owned by the same keeper from September 1995 until he gave up driving earlier this year – it’s barely run-in for these sturdy and indestructible cars.
He bought the Mercedes from Greenoaks Mercedes Benz in Maidenhead, Berkshire, when it was just 10 months old, using it only as a weekend car and for local trips. It spent most of its time in his garage being stored, and was bought earlier this year by one of his relatives who has recommissioned it. IMG_6418.JPG4.34 MB
