The Appeal
The W140 is perhaps the last of Mercedes’ ‘Imperial Phase’ cars, the ones built when the engineering team held dictatorial sway over the whole firm. Known as the Billion Dollar Car because, well, it cost £$1b to develop, it featured innovations like double glazing, the pioneering CAN bus system that controlled the car’s ‘nervous system’ and, of course, ‘seatbelt butlers.’
Alongside the big four-door limousine sat the pillarless coupe, offering buyers Rolls-Royce-level refinement with four-seat comfort. This 1996 car is fitted with the firm’s durable M119 275bhp 4.2L V8 engine and finished in the appealing combination of Azurite Blue metallic over full beige leather with walnut inserts. At 85,000 miles, it is barely run in for one of these cars.
The large history file supports the sense of a well-cared-for car. It has been regularly serviced by main dealers and specialists, most recently in February 2026. The MOT runs to February 2027 with no advisories.
