There had been AMG-tweaked E-Class before, but it was the W210 E55 that set the template for a tyre-smoking, rip snorting riposte to the more sober RS6 and M5 alternatives. This was a luxury Mercedes with a surprising hooligan side. Buyers loved the idea, snapping up 12,000 E55s over its production run.
The car is also notable amongst enthusiasts for being the last ‘proper’ AMG Mercedes. While later cars would be built on the Sindelfingen line alongside all other E-Class models, the W210 E55 was fully built and tested by AMG at Affalterbach.
