The R129 had big shoes to fill - Mercedes-Benz' SL classes had become one of the company's key flagships, and moving on from the R107 was like losing an old friend. Thankfully, the R129 pulled out all of the stops, progressing the design gently into a more modern but recognisable roadster that felt very true to the familiar identity of its predecessor.
The cars have now become one of those remarkably usable modern classics. Eminently drivable, comfortable, yet reassuringly tactile - perhaps one of the last 'true', over-engineered Mercedes-Benz products. It's little wonder so many enthusiasts are now snapping them up!
