The Appeal
There's a long list of very good reasons why low mileage, well-kept R129s are increasingly appealing to enthusiasts. They are the last of the 'engineering-led' Mercedes and considerably more usable and durable than previous generations.
This very smart SL280 is arguably the one to have because it is a later facelift car with the firm’s then-new M112 V6 engine, here in 2.8L 205bhp displacement. It is a handsome car with its ‘green black’ paintwork - and matching hard top - and luxury Saffron leather interior that is accented by burr root walnut veneers.
Despite the sheer usability of the R129, this one has covered less than 71,606 miles in its 25 years. It therefore wears its age very lightly. The history file supports the mileage and shows full service history with a run of book stamps to 71,446 miles in August 2025 by a well known marque specialist. At the last visit the car also received a gearbox service, brake hoses, suspension work and a long list of rectifications to minor issues that is indicative of the vendor's fastidious approach. The MOT is, perhaps unsurprisingly, advisory-free and runs to October 2026.
The vendor says:
"This beautifully kept Mercedes-Benz SL280 is a superb example of the increasingly desirable R129, finished in deep blue with a pale nappa leather interior. The car comes with its matching removable hard-top as well as the black soft-top, and has covered just 71,606 miles from new. It has been very well looked after, with over 2, 600 recently spent at Derrick wells Mercedes specialist. It also comes with a fresh MOT valid until 4th October 2026."

The vendor says:
"The exterior still presents very well for its age, with a strong shine to the deep blue paintwork and only light age-related marks. It sits on a set of tidy 17-inch 5-spoke Albali alloy wheels and benefits from four new tyres fitted last year on Dec 2024. The soft-top is in very good order, and the colour-matched hard-top is included with the sale. A small rust bubble on the front right wing can be seen.
"Inside, the SL retains the classic Mercedes feel with pale leather upholstery, burr walnut trim, heated seats, cruise control, ESP, an electrically adjustable steering column, and the original Mercedes stereo with a CD changer. The leather has slight wear and tear for its age with only light wear on the driver's bolster, the carpets are clean, and the boot area is tidy. Rear Wind Deflector and toolkit included. Generally very well kept example."
