The Appeal
The marriage of Giuseppe Busso’s ‘violin of Arese’ with Pininfarina’s clever clamshell Spider created one of the most characterful open-top cars of the last 30 years. Phase 2 added improved interiors and the 24V 220bhp version of that V6, plus a 6spd manual gearbox.
For all those reasons, these later cars are particularly desirable. The trouble is they’re exceptionally rare with just 168 built in RHD for the UK market. Only 35 of them were blue like this Lightening Blue 2001 car. The current keeper acquired it in 2013 and has used it for European road trips, including a recent 2,600-mile jaunt through many countries with no faults or issues.
The car has been regularly maintained and treated to some significant improvements. It received a full respray in the original colour in 2023, along with Dinitrol underside treatment and localised welding repairs. In the same year, the cambelt and auxiliary belts were replaced, and the cam covers and chrome inlet pipes refurbished. The alternator was replaced last year. The current MOT runs to May 2027 with no advisories.
This is a really tidy, very rare 916 with a great spec and appealing provenance.
The vendor says:
A very comfortable touring sports car, we have undertaken 3 European road trips, the last was 2,600 miles through 8 countries in 3 weeks, with no breakdowns
