The Appeal
Much like its R107 predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz R129 SL enjoyed a long production span. Launched in 1989 and available up until 2001, this Bruno Sacco masterpiece felt thoroughly modern until the last; it remains one of the greatest convertibles of all time.
To celebrate the R129, Mercedes-Benz introduced several special edition variants to mark the end of production. Some, such as the Silver Arrow 500 SL, are well-known, but we'd wager even the most ardent Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts may not be aware that an ultra-rare UK market-only edition was also offered. Known as the Designo Allanite Edition in reference to its colour, just fifty examples were ever made, of which Car & Classic is delighted to offer this original survivor.
The vendor has known of this car for around a decade and has owned it since March 2025. Now downsizing their collection, which includes multiple Mercedes-Benz models, here we have a rare opportunity to acquire one of these little-known Designo Allanite Edition R129 SLs in very good order for its age. The car has covered minimal mileage in recent years but remains well-maintained. Indeed, an invoice in the accompanying history file shows the last major service was performed in April 2025, while the alloy wheels were also refurbished this year.
