The Appeal

If you remember Ebhard Schulz’ remarkable Mercedes-based Isdera Imperator 108i or the jaw-dropping gullwing conversions by Styling-Garage in the 1980s, then this bespoke R230 SL500 is definitely for you. Even if you don’t remember them, but just love one-off specials, then stick with us.

This 2003 SL500 was bought by the current keeper in 2023 and appears to have been converted to the car you see soon after. Work included fitting a wide body kit with big front and rear bumpers and switching the colour to metallic black from the original silver. It suits the car’s menacing visage, as do the 19-inch five-spoke AMG alloys. Inside, the cabin retains the dark blue leather but is trimmed with carbon-effect accents.

Despite the 'V12' badges, beneath the bonnet is Mercedes’ 300bhp 5.0-litre V8. The service book shows the car has mostly been attended to by main dealers, with few miles since the last service. The current MOT runs to April 2026 with no advisories.

Perhaps this intriguing car will upset purists and may be better suited to modified shows than the Mercedes-Benz Enthusiasts Club. But when you get a mobile talking point and something unique to enjoy, who cares?
