The Appeal

Mercedes-Benz has always watched out for captains of industry. Not all of them, the firm realised, wanted the sedate sedan profile of its range-topping S-Class. Some, it noted, wanted the luxury with a more athletic, sporting intent. For them, the firm created first SEC and then the CL-Class, a pair of pillarless coupes as sumptuous as they are sporting.

The second generation CL didn’t mess with a winning formula. The styling, influenced by the McLaren AMG SLR, was more svelte, and there was more power too. The CL500 got the firm’s smooth 5L M113 V8, good for over 300bhp.

This 2004 CL500 is attractively presented in Quartz Blue metallic with Java leather, all offset by some AMG five-spoke alloys. It looks great, helped by the clear attentions of its five keepers from new. The vendor acquired the car in 2021 and has kept up the tradition of regular servicing irrespective of mileage. The car has been serviced annually during his tenure by Mercedes-Benz specialist Derrick Wells. Other recent work has included new tyres, an ABC pump a vibration damper and new front discs and pads.

The car is said to run very well, including that clever ABC system which we are told works correctly with no leaks. The vast history file belies the fact that the car has covered few miles for its age. The car comes to market with the transparency of a lengthy MOT with no advisories.
