The Appeal

The C216 was clearly built to demonstrate the art of the car engineer. Mercedes’ team crammed it with advanced technology that has only now become de rigour on far more ordinary cars 20 years later. That innovation was part of a package that makes the effortlessly comfortable and quick CL one of the best grand tourers of modern times.

This Obsidian Black car was initially registered in Japan before arriving in Ireland a few years ago. As a 2009 model, it benefits from the improvements Mercedes made to the 5.5L 382bhp engine, making it considerably more reliable. We are told it has been well maintained in both Japan and Ireland.

The vendor acquired the car in early 2024 and has subsequently invested heavily in its maintenance. Work has included attention to the sophisticated and lauded ABC suspension system and regular servicing. Other work has included a new starter motor, battery and fuel pump. He says it presents well inside and out. It comes to market with an Irish NCT roadworthiness certificate valid to December 2026.

“The driving experience in a CL Mercedes is second to none. The ABC block suspension glides over road surfaces, and the road holding is exceptional. The standout feature of any CL is the normally aspirated V8 engine. This legendary engine is surprisingly economical on main roads, but its V8 roar is like nothing else on the road. I have enjoyed every minute of its ownership.”
