Anybody interested in buying a Honda in the late ’60s or early ’70s could have done worse than to purchase it from Read Titan at 309/ 311, High Road, Leytonstone. The firm was well-known for its aftermarket tuning kits and café racer conversions, and this Honda CB250K café racer by Read Titan is certainly a cut above the average. It was sold new on November 22nd, 1971, to Charles Grimsey of Epsom, we assume with the tuning kit all in place. It was the recipient of a Read Titan Stage 3 conversion, which included a big-bore kit (new cylinder barrel, head and pistons) taking it up to 350cc, plus Amal carburettors, a close-ratio gearbox, rear-set footrests, a Hailwood-style fuel tank and seat, and a stainless exhaust with Mega silencers. This bike has Borrani wheels and twin leading-shoe brakes, which would have been added later.
Years later, it formed part of a collection in the Isle of Man, from which it was sold in 2016. In 2021 it was sold again through the Gasoline Ally Speed Shop to our vendor, a collector of rare and unusual historic motorcycles. Prior to the sale, it was recommissioned with an engine service, fork overhaul and various new parts, and passed an M. O. T. with no advisories, but it will now need recommissioning again. It is sold with history including the original service booklet and some M. O. T. s, including one from 1982.
