The Appeal
The 914 was Porsche’s first foray into extending its model range. The VW-Porsche badging confused buyers and, for many years, disguised what enthusiasts now recognise as one of the firm’s 1970s gems. Distinctive styling, balanced mid-engined handling and just enough power to deliver real-world fun means that a good 914 makes a interesting alternative to more common two-seat rivals from Italy and the UK.
This 914/4 is an early example that retains the correct early bumpers and headlight design. It is fitted with the VW-sourced flat four 1.7L 79bhp engine and a 5spd gearbox. Painted in stand-out Canary Yellow following a respray, it features touring event roundels and decals that add a further touch of character.
The 914 is true to Ferdinand Porsche’s original engineering principles of light, nimble cars with just enough power. This early example looks entertaining.
