The Appeal
Looking at this XS650, you can see why British bike fans got so hot under the collar about the influx of Japanese rivals. Yet with the benefit of hindsight, its clever blend of British parallel-twin aesthetics and Japanese engineering is inspired and makes the Yamaha easily one of the best and most desirable bikes of its era. No wonder it has been described as ‘the best British twin the British never made.’
Survivors as good and original as this one are hard to find. Finished in attractive red metallic, it shows just 2,933 miles on the odometer, which the vendor believes to be correct, although it isn’t verified.
The vendor imported the bike to the UK in 2022 and has since registered it and kept it dry-stored as part of his collection. He tells us that it is in unmodified, standard condition throughout. Since purchase, he has cleaned the carburettors and got the engine running.
The chromework shows minor pitting consistent with its age, but the vendor says the overall condition is very good for a machine of this vintage. For those seeking an honest, unmodified example of this increasingly collectable Japanese twin, this XS 650 warrants close attention.
The vendor says:
“The engine and bike are unmodified and standard and, considering the age, in very good original condition. The mileage is believed to be correct.
“It's styled on the Triumph Bonny but with the much more reliable Japanese engine and gearbox.”
