The Appeal
Pininfarina’s clever reworking of William Lyons’ beautiful XJ made it more modern and practical and delivered many more years of showroom service. These final Series 3 cars benefitted from Jaguar CEO John Egan’s quality drive and are the most usable of Jaguar’s long lived saloon.
The V12-engined cars lived on long after the six cylinders because nothing on the market quite delivered the same unruffled serenity. This 1986 car is a plush Daimler model with upgraded leather and veneers and extra chrome. It is a really fetching example in the desirable combination of Cranberry Red Mica with Doeskin leather. It also features useful options like a big electric steel sliding sunroof.
The history file supports the low displayed mileage of 50,000 miles. For much of its life, the car was serviced more than once a year, generally always by main dealers or specialists. There is a gap in service stamps when the car was little used, with the most recent service by a specialist in 2023 less than 400 miles ago. The current MOT adds reassurance - it runs to May 2026 with no advisories. The car is eligible for Historic Vehicle tax and MOT-free status from April 2027 based on its age.
The Double Six offers the luxury and style of a Rolls-Royce or Bentley, without the ostentation. This is a really tidy example that would be ideal for shows or touring.
