The Appeal
Mahindra is one of the many car makers that, depending on your perspective, were inspired by or spotted an opportunity in Willys’ iconic Jeep. In 1945 it began building it for post-war buyers. It quickly found a niche with rural farmers in India and also in Australia, where this 1990 CJ340DP began its life.
To signal its local suitability, in Australia it was called the Stockman and there was also a Bushranger model. These were rugged, no-nonsense workhorses. This one spent ten years in Western Australia with its first keeper before it was acquired by the second in the same state and fully rebuilt. It then spent seven years in his collection before passing to the current keeper in 2021. He brought it with him to the UK in 2024.
Now refinished in wartime-themed livery, it is virtually indistinguishable from the Willys Jeep it began life as nearly 50 years earlier. It is mechanically, structurally and cosmetically in fine order. The restoration covered virtually every area of the 4x4.
The vendor reports that the Peugeot-derived 2.1L diesel runs smoothly and doesn’t leak or use oil. The last MOT ran to April 2025 and there were no advisories on test. These Willys variants are exceptionally rare - here is a chance to confound whoever you meet wherever you go.
The vendor says:
“This is a way better than average vehicle and performs as it should, even the steering is not heavy, and the gearbox has all its functionality, including 4WD, and low ratio.”
