The Appeal
The Mazda 323 Familia GT-R was built with a singular purpose: to homologate the 323 platform for rally competition. Pairing a turbocharged 1.8-litre inline-four with a permanent four-wheel-drive system in a compact, lightweight body, it sits alongside the Lancer Evolution and Impreza WRX as one of Japan's great rally-bred road cars of the 1990s — though it remains considerably rarer and less well-known than either.
This example was imported to the UK and first registered here in 2003. It has reportedly been in the care of its current owner for approximately nine years. Finished in Brilliant Black with a black leather and synthetic suede interior detailed with red stitching, the cabin features Mazdaspeed front seats trimmed in black leather with blue cloth inserts and embroidered logos. Externally, it sits on 17-inch Speedline multi-spoke alloy wheels in gloss anthracite and has been enhanced with a range of considered performance upgrades, including AP Racing front brakes, a GReddy triple-plate clutch, an Apexi boost controller, an R33 Skyline GT-R intercooler, and a Cusco front strut brace, among others.
The car passed its most recent MOT in March 2025 at 71,968 indicated miles on its first attempt with no advisories. For those seeking a characterful and increasingly collectable Japanese performance car from the golden era of homologation specials, this GT-R warrants close inspection.Screenshot 2026-09-23 at 11.37.36 Tom Womersley.png1.67 MB
