The Appeal
The original Megane Coupe is one of those great cars that sail under the radar. Except, that is, amongst enthusiasts, who recognise why this car was the UK’s top-selling coupe throughout most of its life.
It was designed and built during a high point in Renault’s history, just after the company had also introduced the original Renault Clio Williams to buyers. That means nimble handling, decent driving position and, in the case of this car, a great engine: the Renault Sport-developed 2L 140bhp 16V IDE motor.
Survivors of this model are rare, especially given the low mileage and top-specification of this car. It is a ‘Privilege Plus’ model, which means full leather, sunroof and smart 16in alloy wheels. Finished in Twilight Grey metallic, it is in good overall condition for its age and has been looked after. The service history shows regular attention to October 2024. Other recent work includes new discs and pads, CV joint, ball joint and a gearbox fluid change.
The MOT runs to November 2025 with no advisories. For enthusiasts of rare, engaging French coupes, this looks like an interesting and rewarding buy.
The vendor says:
“A very rare find, a gorgeous 2.0 16v Renault Megane Coupe with just four owners from new and only 55,000 miles! With a sparkling history, incredible mechanical investment, and a genuine connection to Renault's golden era of sporting cars, this is a true modern classic ready for its next enthusiast.
“This Megane is in fantastic condition inside and out, clearly loved and garaged throughout its life. Regularly washed and protected, it comes with a custom-made car cover included for the next lucky owner.
"This has been a wonderful car — an absolute joy to drive. Every journey puts a massive smile on your face. It's everything I love about Renault at their best: quirky, lively, and packed with character. You never see another one on the road and it gets nice comments everywhere you go. Any mechanic who has ever worked on it has always said what good condition it is in. I’ll be very sad to see it go, but it’s time for someone else to enjoy it!
“This very car was purchased from the respected Stone Cold Classics dealership and was also featured and road-tested by a well-known motoring journalist on Furious Driving.”

The vendor says:
“Under the bonnet lies the legendary F7R engine — the same bloodline as the Clio Williams. This 2.0L 16-valve naturally aspirated unit is renowned for its bulletproof reliability, eager free-revving spirit, and strong mid-range punch. Forged steel crankshaft, high-lift cams, larger valves — all hallmarks of Renault’s motorsport DNA. Producing around 140bhp and 175Nm of torque, the combination of light weight and taut chassis makes this car a true driver’s delight — offering an analogue driving experience that's all but extinct today.
“Upon starting the car, there’s a short knocking sound for a few seconds. This is a very common quirk among Mk1 Meganes, caused by the air recirculation motor gears wearing over time. It doesn’t affect any functions, no damage is being caused, and you’ll soon find it part of the car’s charm. It’s detailed here for transparency, but it's genuinely a non-issue once you get to know the car.”
