The Appeal

The G10 Sportwagon is America’s VW microbus. It’s the van that mobilised the hippie movement, a symbol of freedom and rebellion, and it enjoyed an afterlife as a Hollywood star, inspiring Scooby-Doo’s Mystery Machine and, in later iterations, appearing in Cheech and Chong’s Up In Smoke and, of course, The A Team.

This fantastic 1968 Sportvan beautifully evokes that history. We’re told that it originated in Arkansas, before being found derelict in a field in Missouri. It arrived in the UK via California in 2018, when the seller acquired it. He has clearly been a sympathetic custodian of this 58-year-old van, carefully updating the running gear and mechanicals but retaining as much originality as possible. It wears its original, never-repainted factory bodywork, complete with the kind of honest patina that simply cannot be replicated — though some small pock marks are noted on the nearside sill.

Underneath, the picture is rather different: the underside has been Raptored and comprehensively overhauled, with all bushings, tie rod ends, and the track rod replaced, and the gearbox refurbished. An uprated single carburettor has been fitted to suit modern fuel. Inside, the interior has been refurbished with new carpet, recovered seats, and new lap belts, while the original vinyl on the front seats has been thoughtfully retained. Specialist Evil Ben’s completed much of the renovation work.

The vendor says it drives well for its age, returns 20–22 MPG, and has been serviced yearly since arriving in the UK. Always stored undercover and kept dry, this G10 Sportvan is a fascinating mobile artwork and very usable classic van.

The patina is amazing, and you can see the history through the paint. It's always been in a dry state, so the bodywork is very good.”
