About The Blaauwbank Collection:
This lot is part of The Blaauwbank Collection, an eclectic mix of vehicles spanning nearly a century of motoring. The collection showcases everything from practical classics to high-end collector cars, all carefully curated and stored in purpose-built, climate-controlled storage hangars in Central South Africa's arid climate.
For overseas buyers, this is an opportunity to acquire classic cars that have never been exposed to salted roads and the damp European climate.

Highlights
- Rare South African Apache designed by Michelotti
- Highly original car with one former registered lady keeper
- Currently part of a large private collection
- Desirable 1,275cc twin-carb version
- Rare factory-fitted Lucas foglamps
- Very well kept Turquoise with tan interior
The Appeal
The Apache is one of those great ‘should have beens’ of the chaotic British Leyland 1970s regime. Leykor, BL’s South African branch, needed a three-box saloon to meet local preferences and found the answer in a rejected Michelotti proposal for a new UK saloon. The car was the last throw of the dice for the clever ADO16 platform and proved popular, but BL’s chaos and the fuel crisis stymied sales.
As our photos show, the mix of Austin 1100 central section with Triumph-styled front and rear works well. This lovely Turquoise car leans into the sporty theme with its 75bhp 1,275cc twin-carburettor engine, shared with the Mini 1275GTS. Despite the specification, we’re told that this is the proverbial ‘little old lady’ car which remained with its single previous keeper until it was added to the vendor’s large collection. It is reported to have been garaged at over 2,000 metres above sea level since it was new. The vendor says it drives very well and is in fine fettle.
