The Appeal

The 304 Cabriolet is one of the prettiest drop tops to emerge from Peugeot’s Imperial Era, when the firm built tough, rugged, and beautifully finished cars, often using delicate Pininfarina designs. French coachbuilder Chausson built the 304's drop-top body before Peugeot completed it, and it was a huge success, with 19,000 built between 1970 and 1975.

The ‘S’ model upped power to 75bhp thanks to the 1,288cc XL3S engine breathing through a twin rather than single choke carburettor. The vendor bought this example in 2020 and tells us that it was imported to the UK from Italy, having previously spent much of its life in Cannes. One tantalising detail he mentions is that it may have been owned by actress, singer and dancer Claudine Longet, a fixture of American pop culture in the 60s and 70s who sadly died earlier this year. In 2026, the vendor finally fulfilled a long-held wish to return it to factory ‘S’ specification by arranging for a classic Peugeot specialist to fit a fully reconditioned ‘S’ engine. The radiator, coolant hoses, fuel lines and pump were replaced at the same time.

That work was part of what we are told has been £6,000 of investment by the seller since purchase, including fitting a new black fabric roof, replacement door cards and new carpets. Finished in silver with tan interior, the car presents very well for a Peugeot of this age. There are a few minor points to note in the photos, but the overall impression is very positive.

The vendor says:

“The car is a great example of the 304s. Born in 1973 and painted silver. It catches the eye, often gets photographed and is completely different to the more common classic cars available in the UK. It's been a wonderful experience to own, return to specification and drive over the past 6-7 years.”
