The Appeal
BMW had massive aspirations for the E31 8-Series. Conceived as an ultra-premium ‘halo’ car that would push the firm into supercar-adjacent luxury territory, the firm spent the equivalent of $1.5 billion bringing it to fruition. Festooned with technology and with exquisite shark-nosed styling developed under the tutelage of BMW design supremo Claus Luthe, these were cars for the lucky few.
Just 1,473 4.4L 840CIs were built in RHD. These later cars are appealing because, while the M62 engine doesn’t increase power over the earlier M60, it has more torque, and its Alusil alloy cylinder liners are more durable. This Sport was likely one of the very last and ramps up the exclusivity with its bespoke Individual colour scheme, an option that typically added at least 10% to the £56,000 retail price. The vendor tells us that it is one of just three UK cars finished in Velvet Blue Metallic, a colour that shifts dramatically in different light. Inside, attractive champagne Nappa leather features contrasting blue piping. The M Sport Package adds aerodynamic body styling, sports suspension, and an M leather steering wheel, ensuring the car's dynamic character matches its visual appeal.
Having covered 77,694 miles from new, the car benefits from a comprehensive service history and an extensive file of invoices and receipts that document its careful upkeep. A comprehensive suspension-arm refresh, significant and costly undertaking on the E31, has been carried out, and the car is reported to drive in a composed and assured manner as a result. The vendor reports that the car starts readily and runs well, delivering the long-distance refinement the V8-powered 8 Series is known for.
With a lengthy MOT and recent work, this is a particularly well-presented example of these increasingly appreciated grand tourers.
