The Appeal

Whatever was going on in BMW’s engineering studio in the mid 1990s, we wish we could bottle it. Like its smaller E46 sibling, the E39 M5 can lay fair claim to being one of the greatest four-door saloons ever built. Analogue, engaging, agile and brutally quick, it might even be the best executive express ever. Sonorous S62 V8, engaging manual box and the sort of understated styling for which the word ‘sleeper’ was coined, the E39 M5 is a nailed-on blue-chip classic.

This 2000 is finished in popular Silverstone Blue with a matching two-tone interior, all in very good order for an E39. It is largely standard, including the lovely Style 65 alloys, save for a big brake kit and cat-back exhaust. The vendor bought it in late 2024 and has since put it through a thorough programme of mechanical refurbishment. The rear shocks, suspension arms, thermostat, coolant, various vacuum lines, sensors and alternator have all been addressed, and the underbody bracing has been removed, rust treated, painted and reinstalled.

The vendor states the paintwork presents well for its age, with a few age-related marks, though notes that bubbles are starting to form on the boot and rear right wheel arch. An extensive service history accompanies the car, and with an MOT valid until June 2027, this M5 looks well placed for its next custodian to enjoy.

“It's a fabulous vehicle to drive and the soundtrack is to die for. It's a great cruiser on the motorway, absolutely crunches miles, but when you want to blast it on a back road, not many cars that size would be able to offer the same sharp handling and poise. One of the last naturally aspirated V8s paired with a smooth 6 speed manual gearbox its definitely a product of the time.”
