Introduced at the 1955 Geneva Motor Show, the Fiat 600 (Seicento) was one of the most significant small cars of the post-war era. Penned by Dante Giacosa, it brought modern engineering and genuine four-seat practicality to the compact car class, helping to motorise a generation across Italy.
Powered by a rear-mounted, water-cooled four-cylinder engine with four-speed manual transmission, the 600 combined economy, reliability and usability in an incomparably compact and characterful package. Its success was huge, with production running into the millions and assembly extending under licence across multiple markets.
This 1958 example is a desirable early “Serie 1A” car, identifiable by its rear-hinged “suicide” doors and wing-mounted chrome indicators, features associated with the earliest production cars. Restored in Turin prior to importation to the UK in 2014 and first UK registered in January 2015, it remains attractively original in presentation, having received primarily cosmetic restoration including a respray.
Mechanically sound and used regularly in recent years, the Fiat is reported to drive well and naturally, brings a smile to the driver on every outing. Recently the car featured in the Fiat 500 60th Anniversary celebrations at Goodwood in 2017. It has recently benefited from a service in May 2026 and is accompanied by a good history file, period handboooks and sales materials, and MOT valid until May 2027.
Compact, engaging and increasingly collectible, this early Fiat 600 represents a charming example of Fiat’s landmark post-war city car in desirable early specification.
