. 1993 Alfa Romeo Spider 2. 0 S4
One owner from new, 52, 892 miles, factory hardtop
INTRODUCTION
A genuinely standout Series 4 Spider, finished in striking Giallo Fly yellow with a beautifully kept black leather interior and suede trimmed seats. First registered in August 1993 and still with its one and only owner from new, which is almost unheard of for these cars.
THE SPIDER AND WHY THE S4 IS THE ONE TO HAVE
The Alfa Romeo Spider is one of the great motoring icons. Launched in 1966 as the Duetto and styled by Pininfarina, it became a film star in The Graduate and stayed in production, gently evolving, for more than a quarter of a century. Through four series it kept the same basic recipe: a revvy twin cam engine up front, rear wheel drive, a folding roof and that shape.
The Series 4, built from 1990 to 1993, was the final evolution and the most usable of them all. Bosch electronic fuel injection replaced the older mechanical system, power steering became standard, the bumpers and full width rear light treatment brought the look up to date, and the hood mechanism was the best of the range. It is the Spider for people who actually want to drive and enjoy the car rather than spend weekends underneath it, and it is the last of the proper classic Spiders before the shape was retired for good.
Values of good ones keep climbing, and the cars everyone wants are exactly this kind: low mileage, one long term owner, properly kept, with the big jobs already done. They do not come along often.
THIS CAR
Registered in August 1993, right at the end of Series 4 production, this Spider has had one owner from new. One owner over more than 30 years. Not three owners and a trader, not imported and converted, but one enthusiast keeper who has clearly cherished the car from day one. That kind of provenance simply cannot be manufactured, and it shows throughout.
The colour is Giallo Fly yellow, a proper period Alfa shade that suits the Pininfarina lines beautifully, set off by a black leather interior with suede trimmed seats. The combination really does look the part in the flesh, and it makes a refreshing change from the reds and blacks that fill the classifieds.
This car also retains its rare factory hardtop, which transforms it from a summer only toy into a genuine year round car. Factory hardtops were expensive options when new and most have long since been lost or separated from their cars, so finding an S4 with its original hardtop is a real bonus.
THE BIG JOB IS DONE
Crucially, the work every Spider buyer worries about has already been carried out, and properly.
Ask anyone who knows these cars what to check first and they will tell you: sills, floors and wings. The S4 is more than 30 years old now, and structural condition is what separates the good cars from the ones that will cost you dearly. On this car, you do not need to wonder.
Over £5, 600 has been spent with Bonello Auto Services in the last couple of years alone. In December 2025 the sills, floors and wings were structurally repaired at a cost of £3, 966. In July 2026 the car returned for a full service, diagnostics and fuel system work at a further £1, 698. Photos of the repair work are included in the gallery so you can see exactly what was done, and all invoices are on file and come with the car.
Before that, in February 2025, the car visited Apex Autobody for £1, 000 of bodywork. The total documented maintenance spend on the car stands at £7, 193, all of it invoiced and available to inspect.
Find another Spider at this money and ask the seller when the sills were last done and by whom. Here, you already know.
CONDITION
The condition inside and out reflects one enthusiast owner over more than 30 years rather than a string of keepers.
The Giallo Fly paintwork presents beautifully, with the kind of deep shine that comes from a lifetime of careful ownership rather than a quick blow over. Panel fit is good, the brightwork presents well, and the car sits right on its wheels. The black leather interior with its suede trimmed seats has worn exactly as a 52, 000 mile car should, with no sagging or cracked hide, and the dash, carpets and trim all speak of a car that has been looked after rather than merely used.
The soft top operates as it should and the factory hardtop fits snugly for winter use. Underneath, the recent structural work means you can buy with your eyes open and your head rather than your heart.
MECHANICAL
The 2. 0 litre twin cam produces 120 bhp and revs with the eagerness these engines are loved for, driving the rear wheels through a 5 speed manual gearbox. It is not about outright speed. It is about the noise, the throttle response and the balance of a light, rear drive roadster with one of the great four cylinder engines up front.
Fuel injection means easy starting and reliable running, and power steering makes the car genuinely easy to use in modern traffic. The July 2026 service and fuel system work means the car is driving exactly as a carefully kept, low mileage example should: tight, eager and ready to enjoy from the moment you collect it.
THE CASE FOR BUYING THE BEST
With classic cars, the maths is simple. A cheap Spider that needs sills, floors and paint will swallow £10, 000 without blinking, and at the end of it you will own a car with unknown history. The sensible money buys the best car it can find: one owner, low mileage, the structural work done and documented, and a folder of invoices to prove it. That is this car.
OWNERSHIP MADE EASY
The classic Spider is one of the easiest classics to live with. Parts supply is excellent, specialists are plentiful, owners clubs are active and friendly, and the cars are simple enough to be enjoyed without a degree in Italian electrics. S4 values have been climbing for years, and the best examples are getting harder to find. Buy the right one, look after it, and you have every chance of enjoying free motoring while it appreciates.
