Highlights
- Comprehensively restored
- Flathead V8 engine
- Right-hand drive South African Import
The Appeal
This 1934 Ford Phaeton hails from a time when America led the world in automobile manufacture. Fitted with a flathead V8 engine, this 4-door open tourer apparently boasted 85 horsepower, affording it with performance that few cars of the day could match.
Imported to the UK from South Africa in 1997, this right-hand drive Phaeton was apparently restored by its previous owner and has since been used sparingly. Complete, well presented and in good running order, this example has to be amongst the most usable pre-war cars out there.
The History and Paperwork
- Lived for many years in South Africa
- Imported to the UK in 1997
- Restored by its first UK owner
- The vendor doesn’t get the chance to use it as much as they would like
- Exempt from road tax and MOT
The Interior
- Restored to a high standard
- Brown leather and carpeting
Inside, this Ford has evidently been restored really well, featuring brown leather seats and carpeting it looks to have been done to the original, or at least a period specification. While this is now an older restoration, we understand that this car has been used quite infrequently and so there is really very little wear to be seen inside.
The reupholstered seats have a few creases commensurate with age, but nothing at all concerning. The carpets look really smart and fit well, as do the matching leather door trims. The dashboard is finished in body colour and appears free from any noticeable blemishes. We are informed that the speedometer is currently disconnected.
The Exterior
- Two-tone cream and brown
- Convertible roof
- Wire wheels
Finished in the very period colour combination of cream and brown, the exterior of this car has clearly been doted on, with no stone left unturned during the restoration process. Looking underneath, this car is incredibly clean, suggesting that it came completely apart during the restoration. We were unable to see any corrosion anywhere on the car or on any componentry underneath.
There are a few areas where the paint has blistered and fallen away, on the bonnet around the louvres and on the wings, although this seems quite superficial and the primer underneath clearly adheres well to the metal work.
The vendor informs us that the wire wheels are in good shape although the tyres are perishing and in need of replacement.
The folding hood appears in really good order, including the wooden hood sticks. We are informed that it operates as it should, although bidders should note that there are no sidescreens.
The Mechanics
- 3.6-litre flathead V8
- Rod operated brakes
- Drives well
Unlike many pre-war cars that relied on some fairly diminutive 4 cylinder engines, this Ford Phaeton came equipped with a 3.6-litre V8, which makes this something of a ‘30s sleeper - especially in 4-door touring trim.
The vendor informs us that the Ford drives really well, with plenty of usable power for a car of this vintage. It goes through the gears well and stops adequately, although the vendor warns us that rod operated, unassisted brakes take some forethought.
Summary
Restored to a high standard and equipped with a V8 under the bonnet, this Ford Phaeton truly is a pre-war car that could still be used comfortably on a regular basis.
This example is in really fine condition and is mechanically sound. We’re sure the next owner shall enjoy exercising that V8 for years to come…
