  • Rare, exclusive and supremely handsome inter-war 2+2 open sports car
  • Formerly a VSCC member and competition entrant
  • Equipped with a substantial history file which also contains period ‘Buff’ logbooks

The Appeal

It’s hard to believe now, but during the 1930s, it was expected that buyers of high-end British sports cars would immediately subject them to the rigours of trialling and hillclimbing. Built to be fast and also to last, these cars of the ‘30s were beautifully engineered and many are still going strong. Indeed, to this day, organisations like the VSCC still test these antique cars to their limits in a range of challenging events.
Wealthy motorists would likely be browsing the AC catalogue, as the Thames Ditton-based manufacturer was responsible for some of the fastest and most exclusive sports cars of the era. Here we have a stunning example of the short-chassis ‘Competition Sports’ model, better known as the 16/80. It sports rakish ‘boat tail’ bodywork which hides the fact it’s actually a 2+2. The AC was previously a VSCC member and competition entrant and has since been imported to France where it presently resides.
Impeccably presented and delightfully patinated, this fine vintage motor car would make an excellent addition to any collection and we hope to see it driven as its makers intended.

Condition

  • Besides some small finish cracks and general age-commensurate wear, the bodywork presents beautifully
  • Smart brightwork, with light dulling, scratches and pitting
  • Complete with a canvas detachable roof and tonneau cover
  • The chassis presents well with no obvious corrosion or damage
  • We’re not informed of any issues with the timber framing
  • Lightly worn upholstery
  • Sporting ‘knock-off’ wire wheels
  • A wooden toolbox is mounted to the bulkhead under the bonnet
Unusually, this 16/80 boasts streamlined ‘boat tail’ bodywork, incorporating a separate rear passenger compartment - reminiscent of the water-going twin-cockpit gentleman’s launches of the same era. There’s also an attractive and usable canvas roof, as well as a matching tonneau cover to escond the rear seats and give the impression of an open two-seater.
The bodywork is beautifully preserved and flaunts a handsome age-commensurate patina. Besides some finish cracks to the lower bodywork, there’s little in the way of notable wear and certainly no sign of accidental damage or excessive corrosion. The same goes for the interior which is similarly patinated and original. The upholstery and woodwork present well, as do the controls, instruments and switchgear.

The Mechanics

  • 2.0-litre SOHC straight-six
  • Four-speed manual gearbox (following a conventional ‘H’ pattern)
  • Triple SU carburettors fed by an electric fuel pump
  • We’re informed that the engine has been rebuilt
Powered by the John Weller-designed overhead-cam 2.0-litre straight-six, the 16/80 proved capable in a range of motorsport events ranging from long-distance rallies to off-road trials and hillclimb sprints.
This car drives very well indeed according to the vendor and benefits from an engine rebuild in recent years. We’re informed that there’s ample usable performance which suits this car to long-distance grand touring.
