Highlights

  • An innovative piece of automobile history - the world’s first unibody front-wheel drive car.
  • Imported to the UK and registered in 1993
  • Subject to minor restoration

The Appeal

The Traction Avant was, upon release, the world’s first unibody front-wheel drive car. Thanks to its unibody build, the car was a low-slung, unusually modern-looking motor that immediately turned heads. They were swift, sleek and even rather rakish cars that managed to hold their own admirably.
Imported in 1993, this example has undergone some light restoration and is in superb mechanical order. A quick bit of work and you’ll soon have a very lovely showpiece.

The History and Paperwork

  • First imported and registered in the UK in 1993
  • Good set of invoices from 2009, part of a limited restoration
  • Printed Practical Classics price guide from September 1994
  • 7,500 miles indicated, most likely since restoration

The Interior

  • Original interior with distinctive smooth shapes
  • Some wear to the driver’s seat
  • No front carpet
  • Some staining to door card and ceiling fabric
  • Tear to the driver’s seat upholstery
  • Some age-related patina throughout
  • Original headlining
  • All original instruments are reportedly in fine order
  • Seller notes there are some knobs that he doesn’t recognise
  • Boot appears to be in fine fettle with no signs of excessive wear

The Exterior

  • A generally smart presentation, though with some wear
  • As a later model, this comes with the rear boot extension
  • Chromework shows the odd sprinkle of patina
  • Small marks in the coachwork around the bonnet
  • A noticeable rust spot on boot lid with paint blistering
  • No sign of any dents or major paint loss across the car
  • Some stone chips on front fenders
  • Vehicle has not been welded from what we can discern
  • We’ve not seen under the vehicle, but seller assures us that it’s in ‘excellent condition’
  • Distinctive wheels look to be in good order with a presentable set of tyres

The Mechanics

  • 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine
  • 3-speed manual transmission
  • A surprisingly capable motor on today’s roads
  • Engine bay looks to be in excellent order throughout
  • Gearbox by Citroen Classics installed in 2009
  • Good programme of work throughout 2009
  • No mechanical faults noted
  • No leaks, smoke or knocks reported
  • Overall, a good candidate for a classic daily!

Summary

While there is the need for some cosmetic work, there’s no doubting this Traction Avant’s overall condition. These surprisingly swift cars managed to keep up with their market rivals for two decades, and the moment you get behind the wheel, you’ll understand why.
