1960 Jaguar XK150 DHC

Highlights

  • Original example with matching numbers
  • Excessive amounts of money spent over the years (estimated over £100k)
  • Kept in the same ownership for the last 23 years
  • Some assembly required

The Appeal

Unlike its older siblings, the XK120 and XK140, the XK150 was radically modernised and benefitted from years of development since the beginning of the model line, which kicked off in 1948. So much so that it can actually be considered a separate model - partly due to the fact the XK140 could no longer be manufactured due to a major fire in the production halls of Jaguar in February 1957. A much more spacious interior offered a solution to those who didn’t fit well in the 120 or the 140, known to be rather cramped on the inside for even the average person.
This example has had some serious cash thrown at it over its lifetime, with the keeper estimating over £100,000 in bills. The body had been completely re-fabricated as necessary on a custom jig that replicated all of the mounting points perfectly, with all of the panels created by Red Dragon Customs. Being such a well prepared body and chassis, makes this XK prime picking for someone looking at taking on a restoration with most of the work already done.

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally manufactured on the 12th of February 1960
  • First registered in the UK on the 3rd of March 1960
  • Purchased by the current owner in 1992, in already stripped down condition
  • V5C is present and correct in the current keepers name
  • Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate outlining the vehicles original specifications
  • 1960’s Ministry of Transport paperwork present
  • The vehicle has been stored at a working museum for the past 23 years and serves as a static display

The Condition

  • Bodyshell looks to be in tremendous condition, with just some patina covering the outside. Created by the skilled hands at Red Dragon Customs who hand formed the body panels using the correct age and thickness of steel from other Jaguars of the era while using the factory welding methods.
  • Exemplary shut lines and door closures due to countless hours spent on the bodywork
  • Chassis is reported to be in outstanding condition, aligning with the bodywork perfectly thanks to a prior test fit. Previously soda blasted, painted and rust proofed
  • Interior components are reported to all remain available and in good condition. One minor tear in the original black upholstery is all that is reported
Although the task at hand of rebuilding the vehicle may seem somewhat daunting to some, most of the work is already done for you. The bodyshell is an absolute dream, being the best starting point you could ever ask for without having to fork out tens of thousands to have another one remade - and considering it was manufactured with such tedious and strict working methods, this may be the only XK in existence which has a ‘new’ shell made from just the right stuff.

The Mechanics

  • Factory 3800cc inline 6-cylinder engine, which had been fully rebuilt to an exceedingly high standard and remains undriven. The owner states that the bores etc have been greased for storage to ensure nothing became seized
  • Manual gearbox had been entirely rebuilt by a Jaguar specialist, again remaining with zero miles
  • Rear axle entirely rebuilt with zero miles
  • Front suspension completely rebuilt and trial fitted to the chassis
  • Rear suspension completely rebuilt and fitted with the correct shims
  • Lots of new parts included to finish off the vehicle, including wiring looms and headlights etc
In terms of mechanics, the parts on this car are as good as unused. Zero miles across the board, with the engine and gearbox fitted into the chassis with a new clutch, you can feel just how close this car came to being complete and unleashed back on the road. Having been off the road for so long and kept in controlled storage, it would be wise to give everything a once over. A complete car, ready to be brought back to life!

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
