Highlights

  • The 3rd generation of Simca’s legendary saloon
  • Highly original throughout
  • Registered in Spain with current ITV

The Appeal

The Simca Aronde is a bonafide European legend. Up until 1951, the French brand had focused on cars that derived from Fiat’s product range - but the Aronde? The Aronde was different. Whether it just hit the perfect zeitgeist, or it was purely based on its strengths as a no-nonsense, highly characterful car, nearly one and a half million were sold, spreading across Europe and becoming, for many, as iconic as the Fiat 500 or Mini Cooper.
This example, one of the third generation, is a highly original one, with sharply presented bodywork and an unmodified interior. It’s rare we see one of these so reassuringly original - giving a great opportunity to take on a real European legend.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1960
  • Registered in Spain since at least 1995
  • We can spot some signs of welding, pointing to a potential restoration job
  • Indicates 03,141 miles on a five-figure odometer - likely to have gone ‘around the clock’
  • As a result we expect the true mileage to be at least 103,141 miles
  • Car is complete with Catalonian registration document from 1995
  • Original Aronde service chart
  • Reportedly comes complete with a new ITV

The Interior

  • Highly original interior with fabric seats, with age-commensurate wear
  • Damage to the front seat’s upholstery, exposing the seat padding
  • Door cards present well with age-commensurate wear
  • Original dashboard with period instruments, trimmed in chrome
  • Impressive horizontal combined binnacle in good order
  • Period radio unit and air-conditioning in situ
  • Column-mounted shift behind an impressive Sima-branded wheel
  • Wheel displays some cracks but these appear to be cosmetic
  • Chrysler branded glove compartment
  • Headlining in fair condition with light age-commensurate discolouration
  • Carpets appear to be in good order with no major issues
  • Boot appears solid - we note the welding that appears to be from an older restoration

The Exterior

  • Stylish, characterful exterior in cream
  • Attractive ‘wide-eye’ headlights with a distinctive grille
  • Bodywork appears to be solid and tightly knit with no dents or dings
  • Attractive chrome coachline presents well with no loss to the trim
  • We can’t spot any issues with the paint, save for wear at the sills
  • Lenses and glasswork all present well with no chips or fractures
  • Bumpers are in good order with only light patina
  • Car is sitting on its original wheels, shod in a set of whitewall tyres
  • Underneath, the car is largely solid with some signs of previous repair

The Mechanics

  • Powered by the 1290cc (7CV) Rush I4 powerplant
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Engine appears to be in fine fettle with no major faults
  • The car starts first time according to the vendor, and looks to be in good working order
  • We’ve no reports of any leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke from the engine
  • The vendor informs us that the car has a current ITV

Summary

Utterly iconic, and distinct in its styling, the 1960 Simca is a much-loved piece of French automobile history - and one that still proves very beguiling today. This very original-looking example should make for a great prospect for any collector.
