The Appeal
The Volvo PV544, a modernised version of the PV444, is a classic that stands out for its robust engineering and distinctive design. This was Volvo's first unibody car and was developed in the early days of the Second World War. It arrived on the market in 1944 with distinctive 30s-style bodywork and a low price point; while the car already looked rather retro to modern audiences, the Swedish public reacted positively - and the 444 and 544 became a huge success.
The changes between the 444 and 544 were a matter of evolution, not revolution - and in this guise, the car continued on until 1966 - an impressive twenty-two years on the same platform.
This example, finished in a tasteful 'Slate Blue' with a light blue interior, is a fine example of the model. It boasts a range of extras including 8-spoke Minilite rims, an original Blaupunkt radio, a sunroof, stainless steel bumpers, and Cibie spotlights. The car was imported from Sweden in 1999 and has been partly restored and repainted in its original colour.
As with their later vehicles, the Volvo P544 is legendary for its endurance, and we've no doubt this classic will prove just as impressive.
