The Appeal

Introduced in 1958, the Alfa Romeo 2000 was a great example of post-war Italian styling straight from the off. The car's different guises made it a versatile product from the Italian company, available as a Berlina saloon, a Bertone-designed Sprint, or a Touring Spider. However, they came with a generous price-tag, and even the highest-selling - the Spider - only managed to sell 3,443 cars.
This 2000 Spider comes to us in its traditional European spec, with twin-chrome strips and split-bonnet scoops. It’s a fabulous example, and has been lightly modified to make for a highly versatile, highly usable car.

The History and Paperwork

  • Sadly we’ve been unable to confirm much regarding this car’s history
  • Built and first registered in 1962
  • Modified and restored by a previous owner circa 2008-2011
  • Imported to South Africa in 2014
  • The car indicates 45,387 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • Unfortunately we can’t verify this as an authentic mileage
  • Paperwork file includes:
    • South African paperwork file
    • Handwritten modification notes from a previous owner
    • A list of new parts - however, this isn’t an invoice and can’t be fully verified

The Interior

  • Stylish beige interior with leather seats and door cards
  • Reportedly retrimmed by Cecil Hayes
  • Black plastic dashboard with period, tactile instruments
  • Solid boot with Alfa Romeo embossed mats
Reportedly retrimmed by Cecil Hayes, this Alfa Romeo presents beautifully, with light beige upholstery that’s free of major wear, rips and tears. Everything is clean and nicely kept, hinting that the car has done very little mileage since the retrim was completed. It's been done to what looks like an exceptional standard, with no faults we’re able to discern, and brand new chrome door furniture throughout.
The dashboard is clean and well-presented, with tactile instruments and gentle lashings of Alfa Romeo branding. The instruments are all beautifully presented with Veglia gauges and a period Blaupunkt radio.
We can’t spot any cracks or splits in the dash, the carpets are clean and well-kept, and the boot in the rear looks to be solid with good, solid floors and Alfa-Romeo branded rubber mats.

The Exterior

  • Rich blue paintwork, repainted between 2008 and 2014
  • Rechromed around the same period, reportedly by African Electroplating
  • Refurbished wheels with a full set of Michelin tyres
Fully restored some years ago, this exceptional Spider is still a very beguiling looker. With rechromed brightwork, the iconic Alfa Romeo grille, and refurbished wheels, everything here is in real sharp order with nothing that’s bringing us any concern.
The paintwork is carrying the very lightest signs of wear, but is still presenting beautifully. The chrome is still bright and shining nicely against the paint, and all of the Alfa Romeo branding is in excellent condition.
The glasswork and lenses are clean and nicely kept, and the car is still sitting on a set of period-accurate, restored wheels - which are lacking any major faults. The car is wearing a full set of Michelin tyres, which look to be in good condition.
Underneath, the car is in excellent order, with no corrosion and what looks to be a fresh, clean suspension and exhaust.

The Mechanics

  • Powered by a 2.0L I4 engine
  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • Reportedly rebuilt and restored throughout
This Alfa Romeo has reportedly been subject to plenty of work, from a new cylinder head to an overhauled gearbox and clutch kit. Sadly, we can’t verify any of this due to a lack of paperwork, but a peek into the engine bay is certainly impressive.
Everything under the bonnet is beautifully presented, with the car’s engine looking bright and well-kept, and the distinctive engine head still presenting very, very well. We’ve no reports of any mechanical faults to the car, and from a visual standpoint, this is certainly in line with its excellent condition.
We’ve no reports of leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke, nor any faults with the brakes and transmission.

Summary

Highly presented throughout, and creating a very impressive period profile, this Alfa Romeo really looks the part, and should be highly desirable for any enthusiast.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
